"Making the most of 10-megapixel
Live MOS sensor performance - a new lens and
design development challenge."

“ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses are the result of a thorough approach to the development of high-performance, high-resolution lenses specifically for digital SLR cameras. What we were looking for was a lens design that provides faithful transmission of light from the subject to the image sensor. “But how could we assure that light reached every pixel in the image sensor? We solved this problem by designing and developing every ZUIKO DIGITAL lens specifically to match the characteristics of the image sensor. In this way, we were able to maintain resolution to minimize the loss of image quality and light intensity at the periphery of images, and maximize image sensor performance. The result is that all of the light reaches the image sensor without the slightest loss in peripheral light intensity. “Imprecise transmission of light prevents faithful color reproduction and can create dark, cloudy-looking areas at the image periphery due to insufficient light. The image can be corrected later if enough data is obtained, but nothing can be done if the data doesn't exist. So we considered the low-pass filter as being integral to lens design, and programmed it with essential aberration correction data. "To enable reliable, trouble-free operation in adverse outdoor conditions, we also spared no effort in ensuring that virtually all ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses are highly resistant to dust and moisture. Focusing speed and precision were also a priority, as well as the ability to make fine manual adjustments after autofocusing has been achieved.

"A key benefit of compact,
large-aperture Four Thirds System lenses
is the way they expand
the range of situations in
which shooting is possible."

“Thanks to the Four Thirds System’s inherent advantages —
the ability to make smaller,
lighter lenses with larger apertures — ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses
offer mobility and handling ease that extend the range of
situations in which photos can be taken.
They are amazingly compact, portable, and easy to use,
and boast larger apertures that enable the use of
faster shutter speeds. And in addition to outstanding resolution,
all lenses, teleconverters, and extension tubes feature an
on-board CPU.
“Two-way communication between the lens and camera body
also enables the exchange of essential information about
focal length, aperture setting, and other shooting parameters to
facilitate various types of correction
that ensure consistently optimum image quality.
And I believe that is precisely
what an intelligent lens system designed for
the digital era should provide. In fact,
ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses mark the rebirth of
a tradition and the start of a new legend.”
