Born in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. Began working as a freelance photographer in 1975. In 1981 moved from Tokyo to Oku-Nikko to a new home 1500m above sea level. In 1985 received the Playboy Document File Grand Prix Award. Started releasing work combining photographs and text. In 1986 moved away from Oku-Nikko and back to life in Tokyo. Has held numerous exhibitions including Oku no Hosomichi and Sui-bo-in ("The Origin of Water"). Author of numerous books including Dare mo Ikanai Nihon-ichi no Fukei ("The Best Views in Japan Where Nobody Goes") and Hotaru Zensen no Tabi ("Following the Firefly Front"). Website features photographs and text updated daily. When I'm buying the tools of my trade, I focus on whether they can stay with me for life. I took an early interest in digital, and I started taking my PC to work 5 years ago. Eventually, I began wanting to start using a digital camera as well. When I had this unexpected chance to try out the E-1, I was immediately sold on the camera. I had a good look at this E-1, that felt so good in my hand. I liked the whispering sound of the shutter, that would be gentle even in the middle of the forest. More than anything, the dedicated matching of the ZUIKO DIGITAL lens and CCD give fantastic prints. When I saw photo enlarged into a full-size (508x610mm) print, I was sold. I am confident that I made the right choice.
